Over 90% of all tourists coming to Costa Rica visit this area, with good reason. The Arenal Volcano is an active lava volcano, erupting on average 38 times a day. Although the lava is flowing all day and night you really get to appreciate the lava flows after dark. There are over 60 hotels in the area, most offering great views of the volcano, we will be happy to recommend some of our favorites.
Other tours / activities in La Fortuna are:
Natural mineral rich hot springs
La Fortuna Waterfalls, a 270 mt waterfall where you can climb to the bottom of the falls (542 steps) and swim in the pool there.
River Float Tours
White water rafting on class 3-5 rivers
Hiking the lava fields
Hanging Bridge Tour
The main thing to keep in mind is that La Fortuna and the volcano are located in the rainforest and the operative word here is RAIN. If it is raining you will not see the volcano and being at a higher elevation you will experience cooler temperatures at night, sweat shirts or sweaters are recommended. You can do and see most of the major sites in a 2 day 1 night stay.
